Oh Smokey You Devil

Wine and Richard Alpert get better with age

Wine and Richard Alpert get better with age

Sometimes in life we must patiently a long time for a final book, a final episode, a sequel or even a dreaded prequel. Sometimes that wait becomes The Phantom Menace and sometimes it becomes Dark Knight. Congratulations to the writers of LOST, the lost awaited Richard Alpert flashback was more Man in Black than Jar jar Binks.

Answers, answers, answers, answers. It’s hard to choose one, but if I had to select my favorite reveal from this episode,  how about the fact that the island is really a huge butt plug for evil. Didn’t see that one coming. So Smokey is evil incarnate and Jacob’s job is to keep him locked away (get it) from the rest of the world. I’ve been saying for weeks that Jacob is the “good guy” and after this episode I think it’s time to read the last will and testament to those who think Smokey is the “good guy”. Time of death, 9:55pm EST.  Yes Jacob manipulates, he doesn’t give much help and he sure don’t give straight answers, but while that would make him a good LOST writer, it does not make him evil. Smokey on the other hand, kills, he corrupts and he doesn’t believe people can be good. While Smokey wants to get off the island at all costs, Jacob exists to trap MIB for the greater good. I think it’s time we all accept the fact that white is good and black is evil and the debate is over.

Even if you are still not buying that Jacob is “good” and Smokey is “evil”, I think you have to agree that Jacob is the god figure and smokey resembles devil. Jacob takes a hands off approach and wants people to decide right & wrong on their own. Jacob chooses an intermediary to delivery his message (Richard/Moses) instead of talking directly to the people. Jacob seems only concerned with his overall plan and tells people to trust him but not question him when his plan screws them over. Full disclosure for those readers who don’t know me off-island, I am an agnostic. Thus it’s not terribly surprising that I’ve been frustrated with Jacob all season since he’s constantly displayed the qualities of an absentee god. That being said, I sure don’t want Smokey to win.

Again, I think it’s pretty obvious that Smokey displays a lot of the characteristics typically attributed to the devil. He delivers certainty and tells you exactly what to do (kill Jacob and you WILL get your wife back). While Jacob slightly manipulates, Smokey tells huge lies. Smokey tells Richard he is dead and in hell in order to manipulate him (unfortunately Richard is unaware that this theory has been debunked by the writers). He tells Richard that his wife is alive and being held by Jacob even though dead is dead. He fakes an Isabelle kidnapping via his Smokey-impersonation powers. And he even tells Richard he’ll always take his service if he changes his mind, which is classic a George Burns (Devil) move! Yes I ‘m annoyed with Jacob for not getting personally involved and helping the cause but that just makes him an absentee father, not the devil.

One last thought, if the island is sunk in Timeline X, does that mean Smokey is uncorked and reeking havoc?? Maybe Jacob and Smokey are both dead and that’s why Timeline X is such a better place…

Now the quick hits…

  • It’s been officially confirmed that Smokey killed Jacob to get off the island. Score one more for the “Grand Lost Theory” that I wrote before the Season 6 premier! “Jacob stole my body.” Interesting choice of words…
  • On the other hand,  My “Jacob and Smokey are aliens” and “the island is a spaceship” theories are in some serious trouble and need a good dunking in Jacob’s resurrection pool
  • I think the tenet of “Dead is Dead” is something we can hold our hats on. While Jacob’s powers seem supernatural, they are not limitless. He cannot being back Isabelle from the dead and he cannot guarantee Richard will not go to hell. This tells me he is not a god. It’s interesting that Smokey offered Richard the impossible carrot of bringing back Isabelle which even further’s the “Smokey is the devil” theory.
  • How long did Richard survive without food and water when he was chained up in the Black Rock!?! It seemed like weeks!
  • It seems like Smokey can download people’s memories to decide how corruptible you are. Seems like he made a decision that Richard was the most corruptible of the Black Rock survivors and thus let him live. This may be why he left Locke alive in Season 1, however it doesn’t explain why he tried to pull Locke underground during “Exodus”
  • Is Isabelle the first confirmed Smokey-impersonation of a dead person whose body was not on the island? Not sure if I’ve said this before but if I were him, I’d appear as a naked Juliet and just look at myself all day
  • Lostapedia is now saying that the writers have confirmed the ship in “The Incident” was the Black Rock. After Jacob and Smokey’s conversation on the beach, the storm abruptly occurred. I guess Jacob used the storm to bring the ship in? I wonder if he knew he was going to wreck his statue.

So we got a ton of back story and a bunch of answers, I think that means we are set for a completely answer-free character-centric episode. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by suggesting this will be a Sun/Jin centric episode, although we haven’t had a Hurley-centric episode yet. Here’s to hoping this will be the week when our favorite Koreans reunite, and by “reunite” I mean doooz it. Hey it’s probably been a while for poor Jin…

I think Smokey tried to pull lock underground in Exodus to get him alone. Then he could make his case for him to find a kill Jacob. Or the writers just didn’t know where the story was going yet. Either one…

I am still on Team Smokey, I hate the thought of God, so I would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven.. But as u know Ben and u have told me I am greiving still over the real John Locke and I am in denial, I think Locke is still inside Smokey, just the way smokey knows conversations the real Locke had with other ppl b4 he died, most notable when he tripped in the jungle chasing after the boy when he was with Sawyer(ur man crush), really smokey has been slithering through that jungle for what a thousand yrs, and then scream out “DONT TELL ME WHAT I CANT DO”, that can not be any closer to a genuine Locke moment.. So that being said I am putting my theory in writing : The first part of the season finale u will see jacob approaching Locke b4 he was killed, and he will be the final judgement of what a good person is he will give him a choice if u help me u will have to sacrifice urself and let smokey take ur body over,I also think MIB will come to him and tell him he will let him liove on the Island 4ever which is what Locke really wants It will b Lockes destiny to choose right from wrong choose selfishly and Smokey wins choose for the greater good and jacob wins and prooves the point he has been trying to make all them yrs. With that being said I think he will rise from his grave like lazurus and confront smokey head on and smokey will not be able to strike done the body he is inhabiting or Locke will self destruct and sacrifice himself showing MIB that there are ppl with good souls and he will not give in to temptation, and that is the destiny that the real John Locke was searching for from season 1.

So quick “tree falls in the forest question”:
if smokey gets out, does he just get out in the current timeline or for all mankind across timeframes? If it’s the end of all humanity, does that mean in all scenarios? I guess the question is whether there are infinite jugs or if there is one jug to rule them all. Whatchathink?

Good question, I’ve been thinking for sometime now that Timeline X is how they are going to end the show. They will do something that will sink the island and kill Jacob and Smokey and life will be better for everyone.

Right now, I’m running with a thoery based off the most recent episode *****SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE 3/30 EPISODE!!!***** that Desmond could be the key to resolving the split timelines

I don’t think Smokey let Richard live and kill others on the ship because he’s the “most corruptible”, rather, quite the opposite. If you remember in that episode, Jacob told Richard that Jacob believes in the good in people, and that Smokey thinks everyone is inherently bad, or even if they aren’t, they CAN and most likely WILL be turned bad.

So, Smokey killed everyone else on that ship because they were already sinners and were bad, but by reading Richard’s mind, he saw that here was a man who had murdered, but was ultimately good and had atoned for his sins. So, he only let Richard live, because he wanted to prove to Jacob that he can turn a good man bad, as in that Richard was the most GOOD on that ship. Not necessarily the most corruptible.

Okay, after all of my tireless devotion to Finally Lost, it’s finally time for you to show me some love back. Check out my new blog, Doc Jensen Recap, which will recap Doc Jensen’s long-winded and often indecipherable recaps of Lost each week.

Dave, great concept and good idea. I’ll post a link on my site soon and will be a weekly follower. I am usually a week behind on Doc because I wait until my recap is up before I post. I read your first review and I like it, just make sure you add some pictures (something I don’t do enough I think)

ABOUT THIS BLOG

I have always had a difficult time waiting to find out the ending of my favorite movies, TV shows & books. My resume of obsession includes watching Season 1 of 24 in 3 days, watching Season 2 of 24 in 18 hours and reading each Harry Potter book in one sitting. Knowing that I would love and become obsessed with Lost, I decided to wait before the last season to begin watching it.

This blog will follow me as I watch 5 seasons (103 episodes) of Lost before the final season begins. Relive the experience through me and feel free to mock my terrible theories. Please do not post any spoilers!
